Theocharakis Foundation: A Cultural Landmark in the Heart of Athens
The Basil and Marina Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music stands proudly opposite the Hellenic Parliament. It is located at the intersection of Vassilissis Sofias Avenue and Merlin Street—an area representing the cultural, political, and commercial core of Athens. Designed by architect Vassilis Tsagris in the late 1920s, the Theocharakis Foundation building reflects the eclectic style of the interwar period. It blends influences from several European architectural movements.
Since acquiring the property in 2005, the Foundation has meticulously restored and revitalized it. They have transformed it into one of the city’s most significant cultural venues. The renovation was led by architect Dimitris Agiostratitis for the exterior and the firm P. Tzonos–G. Heupel for the interior. This created a space that balances historical elegance with modern functionality. Every detail, from the lighting to the layout, was designed to serve the Foundation’s mission of promoting art, culture, and education. Furthermore, it ensures full accessibility for people with disabilities, further enhancing the legacy of the Theocharakis Foundation.
